Interview edited by Gid gbr

1. When and how did you meet and passionate to hardcore music?
We’ve met each other more then 20 years ago. Bart and Jelle are cousins and Bas has been their friend since they were 10 years old. In a big group of friends, we were the ones who loved hardcore music. So we were connected on an early age. After a while we wanted to DJ and make our own music. That’s how it all started. 3 boys who just love hardcore music. And look where we are now. Amazing!

2. Why did you choose the name "Endymion"?
When we send our demo to Ruffneck we didn’t expect he’d like it. But he did and he gave us a record deal at Supreme Intellignce. We were so unprepared, we didn’t even have a name yet. Ruffneck had a list of names which he liked. When we saw the name Endymion we knew this was the perfect name for us.

3. How do you feel about being one of the leading artists of Enzyme Records?
It feels good, but we think all Enzyme artists are extremely talented. We just do what we like, we never look at what other peoples do. Being creative is the most important thing when you are an artist.

4. The enzyme Records, Ruffneck's Supreme Intellingece daughter, as we well know, is home of artists with great flair, skill and finesse, is not a common label, especially for its dark sides. Have you a personal opinion about it? How can you describe its evolution as seen from the side of the producer and the differences between mainstream and darkcore / experimental?
We never thought about which style we wanted to make. We’ve been fans of melodies from the beginning. Failure (our first release on Supreme Intelligence) already has an uplifting melody in the 2nd part of the track. Other tunes as We are the future remix are melodic as well. After some years we developed ourselves and we were able to create better melodies, better sounds. It has been a natural process.

5. Linked to the question above, what about the various criticisms on the web, why in reference to Endymion, there was a softening of the sounds, and even tracks containing many pop / commercial elements ?
The more popular you get, the more critics you can expect. If we make a hard track, our ‘melodic fans’ complain. If we make a melodic track, our ‘dark fans’ complain. We don’t look at that. We are artists, and an artist creates something that comes from within. The last years we were heavily inspired by other genres like: dubstep and rock. We have the skills now to make what we want. And when we got the chance to work with amazing vocalists like Warren Morris and E-Life, we take at! It feels so amazing to create complete songs with self recorded vocals etc. Some see it as pop. We don’t. We see it as something creative. And we love doing it. Not everyone will like it. But doing the same over and over again doesn’t do it for us. We won’t make more money if we make a track with a singer or something. Making money with music was only possible before the year 2009. We just make what we like!

6. Who was your inspiration and guide in the growth of the Endymion project?
Every period has different inspirations. In the beginning we were inspired by Ruffneck, PCP and Promo. After a while we started listening to other artists and genres for inspiration. A lot of people say, the old tracks were better. They say this about all artists. But we think everybody should always develop their sound. Change things, take risks! That is the only way to discover new things and to create a new sound. So we respect the old, but always look to the future!

7. Which of all the tracks you have created is the one you like more? Which one gives you more emotions, memories or something special?
From our old tracks we think ‘The Core’ and ‘Mind and body as one’ are our best tracks. The energy in ‘The core’ is amazing. But ‘Abduction’ is probably the best track we ever made. It’s so uplifting and we still play it in most of our sets. It doesn’t get old. From our latest work we really like ‘No More’, ‘Broken’ and ‘Smash’. But we like everything we release, so it’s always hard to pick a favourite.

8. How was it to pass from being an artist of an underground kind of music to become an interenational artist ? How much commitment, perseverance and dedication it takes to deal with monthly trips, production and certainly the family?
Being an international artist means we are away from home a lot. During the week we work in the studio, and in the weekends we travel the world. So it takes a good schedule to have time to relax, see friends and family. It takes a lot of time and hard work to get where we are. But we never complain. Our lives are so busy, but we are blessed to be able to lead this life. When we started we all did it for fun. Now it’s our main income, but we are still little boys when we are in the studio creating a new track.

9. What is the party that stuck in your memory more in your career? What the most unusual / particular instead?
I’m writing this interview in the plane to Helsinki. We’ll play at the MondayBar cruise tonight. Last time we played there was amazing!! That’s an event we’ll never forget. Our trips to Russia and Ukraine (Kazantip) are in our top 10 events of all time as well. In Holland we LOVED playing at Qlimax and Decibel Outdoor mainstage. 28.000 people in front of us. All dancing like crazy on our own music. Simply amazing. Those have been the best gigs in our lives. We don’t like talking about bad events. Every party is a party and every promoter tries their best to make it work. Sometimes that works well, sometimes not so much. It’s all good. We are all in it for the love for the music.

10. Are there upcoming releases? Any collaboration?
After our album we took a break. Our minds were empty after creating so much music in 2011. But we have some new stuff ready to be released! Soon we’ll release 2 new tracks with Nosferatu on Enzyme 40. After that Traxtorm will release our ‘Showtime’ remix for Tommyknocker. We’re also working on 2 new solo tracks which will probably be released before summer. We’re also creating some new mashups and bootlegs to have some exclusive tracks in our sets on the festivals this summer.

11. Enzyme Records has always been worthy of note within the hardcore record sleeves as well as for the mystery that shrouded it, the parties and the tracks (for example the Enzyme X project), and now, we've all noticed your new dedication: videos of tracks. Is that maybe the attempt to spread hardcore easily worldwide, a bit like the softer kinds, or is just simple experiment?
Working with own vocals is just a new step in our evolution. We used to sample a lot. Now we don’t do that anymore. Every vocal you hear in our music is made by us, or made especially for us. They are always unique. We will not use singing in all of our songs. The vocals in Judgment Day and Change we also own written vocals. We do want hardcore to spread world-wide. That’s why we create videos of our tracks. Not for MTV, just for youtube so all people over the world can see what we do. So some tracks will be harder, some a bit less hard. But we are very confident about our new direction. We’ve got great idea.

12. Who would you like to work for a future track with?
In hardcore we’ve worked with some of the best already. We don’t have plans with new collegues yet. We do want to make something with Tha Playah or Amnesys one day. Maybe it will happen, maybe not. But we’d love to work with some big artists from other genres. We want to show the world that hardcore can be a lot bigger then it is now. If dubstep works all over the world, then it has to be possible with hardcore as well.

13. When you produce, what methods are used and how do you elaborate on the preparation of the track? Are there special theoretical music studies?
We always start tracks in different ways. Sometimes we start with a kick. Sometimes we just write some melodies and chords on piano or in the plane. And on other occasions we record a cool vocal and work from there. There is no real structure. We make all our music in Ableton live since 3 years. An amazing DAW which lets us be creative.

14. The Endymion project, for the nostalgic ones, means particularly the millenium hardcore (hardcore 2000) , Do you prefer the millennium times or the turn that has taken the sound now?
As I said before, we are proud of our past, and confident about our future. The tracks on Supreme Intelligence sound like that because we were not as skilled as we are now. We were limited and that’s why we became creative. Because of that we are what we are now. We don’t want to make the same style anymore. We love what we do now. But maybe we’ll change style in a year again. You just never know what will come out of our minds.

15. You have produced many anthems in your career, what does it means and how it feels when you have to produce an anthem?
We did a lot of anthems, we love doing it but we think we’ve done enough now. There’s only one event we still want to make an anthem for. But we don’t think they’ll ask us. When we create an anthem we always think about the party. How the party feels and how the people normally are at those parties. It’s a very creative process but on the other hand you are a bit limited in your possibilities.

16. What about the track "Endymion ft. Evil Activities - To Claim The Future", is there a special meaning behind the lyrics it contains? It's very curious the mentioning of your biggest successes in it.
It’s a summary of all of our hits. We used to make tracks like: ‘We are the future’ and ‘Before your eyes’. In thos tracks we claimed we would be the future of hardcore. And when we made ‘To claim the future’ we wanted to tell that we were right in the past. We were the future back then and we are the leading names now. That’s why we said: We have forseen what the future would be. Maybe a bit arrogant, but we thought it was a good idea for lyrics.

17. Have got aliases to other musical genres? If yes, what are they and what prompted you to create any of these other projects?
We used to make hardstyle as ‘High Voltage’, ‘Mindcontroller’ and ‘Teknoid’. The last years we released some house as ‘Dirty Flavor’ on a big Dutch house label. Right now we are working on a lot of new projects. But have no news about those projects yet.

18. Do you prefere to do a Live Set, or normal Dj Set? Which one creates the strongest emotions and makes you indulge more? In addition, what has changed since the era of analog keyboards and real synthesizers? How much is important to make the MC during the live sets, and what is the feedback ?
At the moment we really enjoy dj-ing. We have so much new music. A live-act can be amazing as well. For example, at Qore 3.0 we did a live show with vocalists and a stunning visual show which we created ourselves. Live is fun on the big stages, and dj-ing can be amazing in small clubs as well.

19. Direct question about the Italians: What do you think of our parties, our clubs, our party people and what are the difference with the Dutch ones ? Is there a people around the world that is stuck in your heart and that given you more heat than others?
You Italians are crazy motherfuckers! They dance extreme, the dress extreme and they show their emotions in an extreme way. It’s a great crowd to play for. We always see what they think. And every time the Italians give us so much love! So yeah, we’re happy to play for you. At the moment Florida is the best place in Italy for hardcore. The Traxtorm crew did an amazing job. They build up the scene a lot in the last years. Our favorite events in Italy are E-Mission and United Hardcore Forces.

20. Where is the idea of then tens of Gabber Movies that you recorded in Europe from? Those videos are so funny, congratulations, you are crazy! Especially when they involve strangers.
It all stared in a hotel room in Maastricht in the year 2000. We were in 1 room together and suddenly I took the camera and Bas and Jelle started gabbering in bed. Since then we did it in more and more places. And during the years they became much more extreme. The voice is always louder and Bas get’s more crazy every time. But we think we should do more crazy videos. We’re working on it. hahaha

21. Time ago, the first Q-dance hardcore event Qore 3.0 took place. You guys played there and we know that you added something special to your live-act that was never done before and you called it "Endymion Audiovisual live-act", what was it about, how did you set it ? How was the feedback from the crowd and how was your feedback?
It was an experiment and it worked really well. We did a 30 minutes live-act. We were supported by E-Life, Warren Morris and Lilly Julian. For this act we made video for every track. So when we played ‘Broken’, the people saw parts from the broken video and other cool visuals. Created the visuals took us a month! So you can understand we were very nervours to see if it worked. But the result was amazing! All visuals were in sync with the music for 30 minutes. Some tracks have cool vocals and those texts were on the screens as well. We do want to do this more often. But we can only do this show in the right venue with the right LED screen.

22. Do you want to give a greeting and any advice to all our users, and new talents that every day post their projects in hope of improving and gaining a leading position in this world? We have got really valid ones, the proof is the contest that is taking place in our forum that will give one of them a chance to meet Art of Fighters in his studio.
Cristian is an excellent person to guide new talent. He is a great producer. I always give the same advise. Be original! Don’t copy artists you like, but try to do what YOU like. It helps to copy a track you like first. Make the whole track exactly the same. This teaches you how a track is build up and arranged. Then keep this in mind and start doing your own thing. And when you get feedback from a label, and it is negative. Don’t reply with: ‘But all my friends like it’. Of course they do! They are your friend and they are always proud. But always listen to the critics from a pro. Think about it and use it in your new productions.

That was the last question, we'd like to point out that we have just finished a monthly charts, voted directly by the community, of the best tracks of Enzyme Records. Here is the link viewtopic.php?f=5&t=25204
Thanks for your cooperation and helpfulness!
Thanks for being so patient with us. It took a long time before we were able to anwer all your questions. We liked your questions and we hope you all like our answers. It’s good to know there’s a big Italian forum with passion for our music.
Grazie a tutti! See you all soon!!!

Anche altre tracce come We are the future remix sono melodiche.

10. Avete in previsione future imminenti uscite? Qualche collaborazione?

Partiamo sempre in maniera differente ogni volta.

16. In merito alla traccia "Endymion ft. Evil Activities - To Claim The Future", vi è un particolare significato dietro al testo in essa contenuta?

Eravamo abituati a fare tracce come “We are the future” e “Before your eyes” e in queste traccia volevamo affermare di essere il future dell’hardcore. Quando abbiamo fatto “To claim the future” volevamo dirlo che avevamo ragione in passato, che già allora eravamo il futuro e ora siamo tra i nomi principali. Per questo abbiamo detto: “We have forseen what the future would be” (abbiamo previsto come sarebbe il futuro), forse è un po’ da arroganti ma abbiamo pensato che fosse una buona idea per la traccia.

Come l’avete prodotto?

Ci abbiamo messo 1 mese a creare questi effetti!

Pensateci e mettetelo in pratica nelle vostre produzioni
