Hm Interview: Odious

We are back with our interviews to the worldwide hardcore artists!
It's time for ODIOUS, the new talent producer from Norway. To those of you who didn't follow the "A night of madness remix contest" from Dj Mad Dog, he is the artist who came second, so congratulations !!
He will tell us who he is, and how is going to be his future. Check it out with us, with this exclusive new interview for Hardestmusic.it

Interview by Alex b Hard

1. Hi Odious,
First of all, thanks for your time and input Let's go back in time first, tell us something about you and your past. Where are you from? How old are you? When did you start listening to Hardcore? And how did you start producing it?

My name is Marc Benton, I'm 26 years old and I was born and raised in Manchester, UK. But when I was 16, I moved to La Manga in the south of Spain. But I had never heard of Hardcore until I was 18. It was a track by Javi Boss & Juanma called "Seven" which I originally heard while skipping radio stations. It was a complete accident, but after hearing that, I literally scouted this radio station every single day waiting to find out who the artist's were and the name of the track. I eventually found it, and it all grew from there. The Hardcore scene in Spain is bigger than a lot of people think, so it wasn't long before I was meeting people with the same love and interest as me. Producing Hardcore though? I would say I was 19 when I made my first track. But even then I had no idea where to send it. So again, I looked around and found the website of Elite Forces, and so I sent a demo to them. At the time they were my idols and was very surreal to actually get a response from one of them (Kimo Arends). He didn't like the track very much, but encouraged me to keep going.
So I guess that's where it all started...

2. What about the Hardcore scene in Norway, are there many people who listen to Hardcore or not? Are there any parties?
Just so you're not all confused, as the credit crunch hit Spain, I moved to Norway as I have family here, also for work and a more secure future. And I don't regret it for one second, I've had the best years of my life here...But, there is one downfall, and that's the Hardcore scene. It just doesn't exist here, yet.
Petrochemical is probably the only established artist I can think of that's Norwegian, and he lives just around the corner from me. But you can see on various forum's that there's a growing scene here. But it will take time like it did in Sweden, and even then, the scene there isn't huge. Again, yet.

3. How did you come up with your first release in 2009 called "Do It Myself" on Gunpowder Records? Is there a reason why you chose that title? I personally played it many times, I've loved it since the first time I listened to it.
Thanks Alex I appreciate it! To be honest though, there wasn't a whole plan around the whole release. I sent a track prior to this to Gunpowder Records, and again, I got shot down as they didn't like it. But I kept going and came up with "My Melody" and after talking with the label and making some adjustments it was accepted and I was told to make another two tracks. So, 5 months later, Talk Is Cheap and Do It Myself were born and they were released November of that year.
The reason for naming the E.P that? I guess it was the track that grabbed my attention the most from the three, and the style (at the time) I wanted to be known for. Now all that's changed, I have a different mentality with music and my approach to producing.

4. How much time did it take to start releasing?
I would say around two years, and just before I signed with Gunpowder, I sent a demo to Sonic Solution and was accepted for a possible release with G-Net Records. But it never worked out due to Spanish copyrighting firm S.G.A.E. They took to long to process my copyrighting and over a year later, Sonic Solution had lost interest. I don't blame them! So, a word of advice, if you need a copyrighting company, do not use them!

5. Have you been working on any new project before you joined Mad Dog's Contest?
To be honest since my first release I had a few personal problem's which more or less just kept getting bigger and bigger, one thing after the other. Snowball effect! So I really didn't have the drive or even time to produce. This summer though, something happened and just changed my perspective on life for the better, I couldn't be happier! And the remix contest came up at exactly the right time. My drive for producing is stronger than it's been in a long time. So, in a nutshell, it's been a very dull three years up until this summer.

6. What about that challange, how do you feel about coming second? Did you expect it? What do you think about Neural Damage's track?
To tell the truth, when I was making the track, I just wanted to make the very best and original take on it, I didn't enter to win, I just wanted at least feedback from Filippo to maybe take that extra step with my production and maybe at the most get some pointers from him. But ,after hearing some of the previews online, I thought maybe top ten or twenty as there wasn't anything that grabbed my attention. But second was amazing! And completely unexpected!
Greg's track I heard a week or so before and I had a feeling he would win it, not only his production, skills and mixdown, but his whole take on the track was the most original. And I think it's a great track from start to finish. So, congratulation's mate!

7. It's official, as you said on your Facebook page you are no longer an artist on Gunpowder Records. Are you working for another label?
I've not officially signed to anyone and I don't want to give to much information, but I have agreed to start a project with a label owned by Sonic Solution. So I'm very proud, especially to be learning from my idols, it's something I've dreamed about! Filippo, Cristian and Maxx have all been superb and seem very eager for me to learn and progress as an artist. And especially Filippo, he's been teaching me a lot of stuff. So, yes, it's a dream come true.

8. We know that you can produce, but the question now arising is: Can you DJ? Have you already played at any parties?
I've always DJ'd, since I was 13. It was the original dream! But not at any parties I'm afraid. Like I said, there is no scene in Norway at the moment. So, for an agency to sign an unknown artist that has to fly out to Holland or Italy every weekend is just not good business. They can get someone who can do it just as well just down the road. Hopefully though, this will change in the next few years!

9. Have you got a particular party that you wish to play at? If yes, why?
Well, the dream would be to play at all the big venues or events. But, if I had to choose, it would probably be Hardcore Italia, which is my pride and passion and what all of my biggest idols have been a part of. So that would be an honour above all else. But I'm not Italian, so I think this might be pretty difficult!?

10. Who are your favourite artists? Not only Hardcore ones. Are there any producers you get inspiration from? Anyone you dream to collaborate with in the future?
Non - Hardcore I'd say Hans Zimmer. He writes and produces more or less all film scores in cinema. I've always loved classical and very mellow styles of music. So for me, he is a massive inspiration.
Hardcore I'd say Amnesys hands down. Dario is, and always has been my idol in Hardcore and this is because I can't think of a track he has produced that I don't like. Everything is top notch quality, and always takes a different approach to how a track is built. But above all, he isn't afraid to try something new, and I respect that!
Other artists obviously include the guys at Traxtorm, especially Tommyknocker, The Stunned Guys, Art Of Fighters, Alien T, Mad Dog & AniMe. Hellsystem from Hardcore Blasters, Advanced Dealers who is a great talent and a really nice guy, Neural Damage, good friend and obviously an amzing artist! XENO, has some mental ideas and one of my best friends in the scene! But to be honest, every type of music and artist should be an inspiraton.

Collaboration? At the moment, I'm actually in collaboration with an artist mentioned above, who knows what will come of it... But there are a few issues so it might take a while.

11. Are you working on any projects for the new label?
I am indeed, since I came in contact with the guys at Sonic Solution then my drive for making music has exploded. I am literally in the studio every single day for many hours, learning and evolving my sound. But it's something I have to be patient with, I want this release to be as perfect as I can make it.
I have also been contacted by a big artist from Traxtorm Records about making a remix for his next E.P.

12. How do you make music? What hardware and software do you use?
With two pans and some stricks ahha XD
Jokes apart, I use FL Studio 10. Software would include all the usual suspects, Synapse Hydra, Gladiator, ReFX Vanguard, Zebra 2, Sylenth 1, Devastor, Predatohm, Ohmicide, Pseudo, Camel Phat and many more…
Hardware would include an Access Virus TI2 Desktop, Waldorf Blofeld, SPL 2Control, Audioscope 2813 E, a lot of Behringer hardware including EQ's, Compressors and Distortion units and other things. My favorite toy is my MBase 11. It can give me some insane kicks. Would recomend it to anyone.

13. Anyone in particular that you want to thank for what you've done up to now?
First, I have to thank XENO, a producer from Ireland who also released on Gunpowder, but we met around 2006 on Bebo and we've helped each other a lot since. So he's probably the big one to thank.
GIF Phobia, who gave me my first release, will never forget it!
Kimo Arends, who listened to my first track.
My dad, he let me use his office computer to make my first release as mine wasn't good enough, and last year, when my computer literally blew up, he bought me a new one within a week. So without him, none of this would be possible. Cheers Ted!
My room mates Robby and Felicia who have to deal with my late nights producing, sorry guys.
Sharon, who I've only known a few months, but is just so supportive of me and pushes me to do better. She's literally the best person you could ever meet.
Obviously my mum, who loves Trance but still listens to my tracks even though I know she hates it.
My whole family, the guys at Traxtorm and obviously my small fan base, I could probably thank them all individually within an hour. And obviously to you Alex and all the staff of Hardestmusic.it for my first interview.

14. To who wants to stay up to date with your projects, what's your Facebook page?
http://www.facebook.com/officialodious
I'm going to be cheeky and add a few more in here...
http://www.twitter.com/officialodious
http://www.soundcloud.com/officialodious
http://www.youtube.com/user/officialodious

15. Last but not least: What do you want to say to your fans/followers?
If there is any help you need in starting to produce then don't hesitate to ask, I will try my best to give pointers and feedback, who to ask and where to send demos. Thanks to all of you who have been very patient in waiting for new tracks from me, but I really hope to be back soon! And I hope one day I can thank you all in person! All the best guys!

Thanks for your time, Marc. It's been a pleasure to interview you.

Pleasure's all mine guys. Cheers!

1. Ciao Odious,

A produrre Hardcore?

Voglio precisare cosi nessuno fa confusione.

3.Come è arrivata la prima uscita nel 2009 chiamata “Do it my self EP” su Gunpowder Records?

Così, 5 mesi dopo, “Talk is cheap” e “Do it myself” erano nate per poi essere stampate a novembre di quell’anno.

Hai già suonato a qualche festa?

12.Come produci, quali software e hardware utilizzi?

Uso due pentole e qualche bastone ahahah XD
Scherzi a parte, uso FL Studio 10. I sofware sono i soliti: Synapse, Hydra, Fladiaro, ReFX, Vanguard, Zebra 2, Sylenth 1, Devastor, Predadohm, Ohmicide, Pseudo, Camel phat e tanti altri.

http://www.facebook.com/officialodious
http://www.twitter.com/officialodious
http://www.soundcloud.com/officialodious
http://www.youtube.com/user/officialodious
